New Residential Customers will have a deposit added if our credit check reveals that there is an unpaid balance with another Wisconsin electric utility within the past six years. The deposit is calculated on the two highest consecutive months within the last 12 months.
New Commercial Customers will usually have a deposit added. The deposit is calculated on the two highest consecutive months within the last 12 months. This amount may be reviewed during the deposit time-frame and adjusted.
Any Customer that has had service disconnected for non-payment will also have a deposit added to their account.
Under the rules of the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, PSC 113-0402(1)(a) a Customer has an outstanding account balance with any Wisconsin electric utility or cooperative which accrued within the last six years.
Under the rules of the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, PSC 113.0403(1) If the credit of an applicant for commercial and farm service has not been established satisfactorily to the utility, the utility may require the applicant to post deposit.
Under the rules of the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin PSC 113-0402(4)(a)(1) a utility may require a cash deposit or other guarantee as a condition of residential service if any of the following circumstances apply. The utility has disconnected the customer's service within the last 12 month period for violation of the utility's filed rules or for nonpayment of a delinquent service account not currently in dispute.
You will receive written notification of the requirement to post a deposit. You will have 30 days to produce a guarantee or to make the payment. If you have not responded, the deposit amount will be divided into three equal payments and applied directly to your bill.
Residential Customers that have received an Energy Assistance payment within the last 12 months will automatically qualify for an exemption. If MU fails to apply your EA exemption, please call our Office at (715) 387-1195 to allow us to correct.

Residential Customers will receive their posted deposit back after making 12 consecutive on-time payments. An interest amount, as determined annually by the Public Service of Wisconsin, will also be applied to the refund amount.
Commercial Customers will receive their posted deposit back after making 24 consecutive on-time payments. An interest amount, as determined annually by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, will also be applied to the refund amount.
